A little kick in the pants

Today all I wanted to do was finish up my errands in a jiffy so I could get home, put my pjs back on, and do…well, nothing.  And then I didn’t even get to my errands.  Not exactly my plan for 2012.  “Waste Days by Doing Nothing” isn’t a bullet point on my goal list.

After breakfast I was going through some old books on my packed bookshelves and came across one of my favorite gems from that sweet chap Mark Twain.

Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things that you didn’t do than by the ones you did do. So, throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the tradewinds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover. -Mark Twain

Oh, Mark.  Way to guilt me into living.

I think I’ll post this on my fridge so I’m motivated to do more than stand like a penguin in front of the open fridge door, waiting for food to find its way to my mouth.

  1. Beautiful quote and something to remember at any age. Treading water is fairly easy but swimming gets you somewhere depending on the currents which may take us to unexpected and exciting places. Well lets hope 🙂

  2. Hi Cherie 🙂 I love to know things. I am not content to live within four plain walls (real or imaginary). I have lots of ideas, plans, wishes, and dreams, but they rarely are more than that because I fear to “sail away from the safe harbor.” Going to new places, trying new activities, and meeting new people are all opportunities for me to learn and prove that “I can”, and it is also an opportunity for me to share. It’s been my goal since last year to stop thinking and fearing, and just do (after I plan, revise, discuss with Danielle, and reschedule twice.). 🙂 I love this quote! Wow…that was long…

  3. @ Jennifer: I am with you, J. Totally with you. Here’s to 2012, right?! We will swim together (as Cherie mentioned)!
@Cherie: Thank you for reflecting on this with me. 🙂 I can always count on M.T. to make me think and push me to explore my world!

I love your comments and read them all.
